Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy at Satya Psychology

This page answers the questions we're asked most often about booking, fees, Medicare, cancellations, confidentiality and what sessions are like at Satya Psychology. If your question isn't here, email us at info@satyapsychology.com.au or call 07 5241 4464.

Getting started

Do I need to be in crisis to see a psychologist?

No. You don't have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many of our clients are high-functioning women, new mums and couples who look like they're coping but feel overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected or exhausted inside. If you're thinking about therapy, that's usually reason enough to explore it.

What do you help with?

Our team works with anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, perinatal and postpartum mental health, relationship and couples concerns, stress and burnout, grief, life transitions, self-esteem, perfectionism, people-pleasing and more, including the things that don't quite fit into a box. Read more on our services page.

Who will I see?

Our team includes our founder and registered psychologist Mirinda Smith, provisional psychologists Natalie Luxford and Maddison Weinert, and counsellor Isabelle Bucher. You can read about each person's background, approach and availability on our About page. Not sure who to choose? Read How to Choose the Right Psychologist for You or get in touch and we'll help.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is about getting to know you: what's brought you in, some background, and what you'd like to be different. You don't need to prepare, and you only share what you're comfortable with. See What to Expect at Your First Therapy Session.

Booking

How do I book?

Click "Book now" on our website. You'll be guided to create an account in our secure booking system, where you can book, reschedule and cancel appointments. You'll receive reminders and messages by text and email through the same system.

Do I need a GP referral?

Only if you want to claim a Medicare rebate for sessions with our registered psychologist. In that case, you'll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP before your first session.

Sessions with our provisional psychologists and our counsellor don't need a referral.

How often will I come?

It depends on your goals and circumstances. Many people start weekly or fortnightly, then space sessions out as they build momentum. We'll work out a pace together that feels supportive and sustainable, both emotionally and financially.

Fees and rebates

How much are sessions?

Fees vary by practitioner and session type (telehealth, in person, Walk and Talk and couples). Our current fees, rebates and out-of-pocket costs are listed on the services page.

Can I claim Medicare?

Yes, for sessions with our registered psychologist if you have a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral. You can claim up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year. For Walk and Talk sessions, ask your GP to note on your referral that therapy outside a consulting room is appropriate, for example: "The client is suitable for and would benefit from therapy delivered outside a traditional consult room environment." See Medicare Mental Health Care Plans Explained.

Is couples counselling covered by Medicare?

No. Medicare doesn't cover couples sessions, so you don't need a referral. Some private health extras policies may contribute; check with your fund.

Why choose a provisional psychologist?

Provisional psychologists have completed at least five to six years of university training and are in the final stage of supervised practice. You also benefit from the guidance of their senior supervisor. There's no need for a GP referral or care plan, so you're not limited to a set number of sessions.

Can I use private health insurance?

Many extras policies cover psychology, but cover varies. You can't claim both Medicare and your health fund for the same session. See Private Health Insurance and Psychology Rebates.

Cancellations

What's your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule, so people on the waitlist can take the appointment.

  • Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice are charged 50% of the session fee.

  • A no-show is charged the full session fee.

We understand emergencies happen. If something unforeseen comes up, let us know as soon as possible; we may waive the fee at our discretion.

How do I cancel or reschedule?

Through your account in our online booking system.

Sessions

How long is a session?

Your practitioner will confirm session length when you book.

Where are you located?

  • In person: Mirinda sees clients on Fridays at The Lavarack Rooms, opposite The Oxley in Nobby Beach.

  • Telehealth: available Australia-wide.

  • Walk and Talk: along established pathways on the Gold Coast, from Southport to Currumbin. Each practitioner has their own locations; see the services page.

What is Walk and Talk therapy?

Walk and Talk therapy is an alternative to traditional in-room sessions. We meet outdoors and walk side by side while engaging in therapy. Many clients find it feels less confronting and more natural than sitting face to face. Read why Walk and Talk therapy could be the perfect option for you.

How does the first Walk and Talk session work?

The first session is held by telehealth, so we can make sure Walk and Talk suits you and discuss session structure, confidentiality, wet weather, emergencies and consent. We'll agree on a meeting point together.

What happens if it rains?

We'll agree on a wet-weather plan together in your first (telehealth) session.

Does telehealth work as well as in-person therapy?

For many concerns, research shows telehealth is just as effective. See Telehealth Psychology: Is Online Therapy Right for You?

Is there really a therapy dog?

Yes. Our counsellor Isabelle offers dog-assisted Walk and Talk sessions with her certified therapy dog, Reuben, a golden retriever. Isabelle is currently on parental leave; contact us for updates on her availability.

Confidentiality

Is what I say confidential?

Yes, with a small number of legal and safety exceptions, which your practitioner will explain in your first session. See Is What I Say in Therapy Confidential?

Will you contact my GP?

If you've been referred under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, your psychologist is required to send your GP a brief report after your initial course of sessions. We'll talk with you about what's included.

ADHD and assessments

Do I need an ADHD diagnosis to start therapy?

No. You can explore ADHD traits in therapy without a formal diagnosis. Therapy can help you understand your patterns, build practical tools and decide whether a formal assessment feels right. See Adult ADHD: Signs, Diagnosis and Support.

Urgent help

Are you a crisis service?

No. If you're in crisis or feel unsafe, call 000, or contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 (24/7) or the Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467. For perinatal support, call PANDA on 1300 726 306.
