A Guide for GPs: Referring Clients to Satya Psychology

Thank you for considering Satya Psychology for your patients. This page sets out who we see, how to refer under Better Access, what happens after referral, and how we communicate with referring practitioners. For referral enquiries, email info@satyapsychology.com.au or call 07 5241 4464.

Who we work with

Satya Psychology is a Gold Coast practice offering in-person, telehealth (Australia-wide) and Walk and Talk therapy. We work with adults and adolescents presenting with:

  • anxiety, including generalised anxiety, social anxiety, panic, health anxiety and OCD

  • depression and low mood

  • perinatal and postpartum mental health, including antenatal and postnatal depression and anxiety

  • trauma and PTSD, including complex trauma

  • ADHD (therapy and support; we don't currently provide formal diagnostic assessments)

  • stress, burnout and workplace issues

  • grief and loss

  • life transitions and adjustment difficulties

  • relationship difficulties and couples therapy

  • self-esteem, perfectionism, people-pleasing and emotional regulation difficulties

  • chronic pain and chronic health conditions

  • sleep difficulties (non-clinical insomnia)

Our practitioners draw on CBT, ACT, DBT skills, mindfulness, psychodynamic, attachment-based and somatic approaches, within a trauma-informed framework.

We are not a crisis service. Patients at acute risk should be directed to emergency services, the local acute care team or hospital services.

Our practitioners

  • Mirinda Smith — Role: Founder, Psychologist (general registration); Referral: MHTP referral required to claim Medicare; Medicare: Better Access rebates apply

  • Natalie Luxford — Role: Provisional Psychologist (telehealth); Referral: Not required; Medicare: No rebate

  • Maddison Weinert — Role: Provisional Psychologist; Referral: Not required; Medicare: No rebate

  • Isabelle Bucher — Role: Counsellor (currently on parental leave); Referral: Not required; Medicare: No rebate

Provisional psychologists work under the regular supervision of a board-approved supervisor. Because no Medicare rebate applies, patients seeing them aren't limited to the annual Better Access allocation, which can be useful for patients who need more than 10 sessions in a calendar year.

Full profiles are on our About page.

How to refer under Better Access

For Medicare-rebated sessions with Mirinda Smith:

  1. Prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral as usual. Since 1 November 2025, the plan and referral need to come from a GP or PMP at the practice where the patient is enrolled in MyMedicare, or from the patient's usual medical practitioner.

  2. Address the referral to Mirinda Smith, Satya Psychology, and specify the number of sessions (up to six in the initial course).

  3. Include relevant history, current medications, provisional diagnosis and any risk information.

  4. For Walk and Talk therapy, please note on the referral that therapy outside consulting rooms is appropriate, for example: "The patient is suitable for and would benefit from therapy delivered outside a traditional consult room environment." This supports the appropriate item being claimed.

  5. Send the referral to info@satyapsychology.com.au, or give it to the patient to bring. The patient books directly through our online system.

Psychiatrists and paediatricians can also refer directly under Better Access.

What happens after referral

  • Booking: patients create an account in our secure online booking system and book their first appointment. We encourage patients to book promptly after receiving the referral.

  • Initial session: assessment, goal setting, confidentiality and consent, and risk screening. For Walk and Talk, the first session is always via telehealth to assess suitability and discuss safety, confidentiality and consent.

  • Treatment: evidence-based, collaborative therapy, typically weekly or fortnightly to begin with.

Communication with referrers

  • Initial course report: after the initial course of treatment, we provide a written report on progress, outcomes and recommendations, including whether further sessions are recommended.

  • Significant concerns: if we identify significant risk or a change in presentation, we'll contact you directly, with the patient's knowledge wherever possible.

  • Ongoing liaison: we're happy to discuss shared patients, particularly where medication, perinatal care or chronic health conditions are involved.

Session formats

  • In person: Fridays at The Lavarack Rooms, Nobby Beach (Mirinda Smith)

  • Telehealth: Australia-wide, all practitioners

  • Walk and Talk: Gold Coast locations from Southport to Currumbin, along established pathways with access to facilities and seating

  • Couples: in person or via telehealth (not covered by Medicare; no referral needed)

Current fees are listed on our services page.

Patients well suited to Walk and Talk therapy

Walk and Talk therapy can suit patients who find face-to-face therapy confronting, those with stress, burnout or low mood who benefit from movement and time outdoors, new parents who can bring a pram, and people who struggle to sit still, such as some adults with ADHD. It may be less suitable for patients with significant mobility limitations, high acute risk, or privacy concerns about public spaces. We assess suitability in the first telehealth session.

Cancellation policy

We ask patients for 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice incur a 50% fee, and no-shows incur the full fee, with discretion for genuine emergencies.
